Abstract
Presented at the American Libraries Association Annual Conference in Washington, DC June 2019.
Taking on new collection as a subject librarian can be a daunting task. The collection is large and unfamiliar, and you have to immediately start purchasing and communicating to your new department about the books, e-books, journals, etc that you have and make purchasing choices on a limited budget, while maximizing every dollar available. In order to get an overview of a 3,000 item collection, an Anthropology librarian took a list of monograph titles and created data visualizations to better interpret trends in the collection such as gender of authors, years of publication, country and other regions of focus, number of checkouts, and more to get a better understanding of the collection and make more informed purchasing. All visualizations will be presented with directions for creating the data tables in Excel and visualizations presented in both Excel and Tableau Public. This colorful poster is intended for those with limited Excel experience and looking for ways to understand a collection for making conscious purchasing, right-sizing, advocating to academic departments and more.
