Abstract
This thesis describes the design and verication of a force measurement instrumentusing levitation through use of a voice coil actuator. The device can suspend an external force of up to 10N, and determine that external force to within ±0.003N. Mechanical design, electrical design both analog and digital, manufacturing processes, and the resulting measurements are described. Flexures, voice coil design, positioningsensors, and control systems are all integrated through use of an additively manufactured frame. Design objectives to limit manufacturing time and complexity, providethe ability to make design changes easily, and provide proof of concept feasibility areaddressed.
