Abstract
This research is aimed at investigating the interaction between a broadband dipole andmetamaterials. Metamaterials are artificial electromagnetic structures whose electricpermittivity and magnetic permeability can be engineered to have parameter valuesnot available naturally. Metamaterials are popular in modern day research due totheir interesting properties. The affect of using metamaterials to alter the directivityof the broadband dipole antenna is the focus of this work. Different metamaterialunit cells have been designed to be used as near field components to achieve selectivedirectivity and improved gain. The antenna and metamaterials are modeled in ANSYSHFSS, a full wave FEM electromagnetic solver. On achieving satisfactory resultsfrom the simulation of the bow tie antenna and metamaterial unit cell separately, theprocess is extended to the design of a bow tie antenna surrounded by a 4x5 array ofedge coupled split ring resonators also known as complementary split ring resonatorsthat exhibit negative permeability when excited by the axial magnetic field from theantenna. Unlike, the conventional dipole antenna with omni-directional propagationthe new antenna is designed to have directional propagation, and improved gain.
