Abstract
Using newspapers from Mexico City, Ciudad Nezahualcotyl, Queretaro, and other cities throughout Mexico and outside of Mexico alongside official documents and publications, I argue that the Mexican government led by President Miguel de la Madrid supported the bid for the 1986 World Cup during the "Lost Decade" in order to hold onto popular support and as an attempt to present a stable Mexico to the world. I also demonstrate that popular criticism against the government’s decision to support the bid used soccer jargon and imagery to construct their arguments.
