Abstract

This project examines the Save Siloam School Project exhibit located at the Charlotte Museum of History. The Charlotte Museum of History is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization, offering exhibits on various topics related to the history of Charlotte, NC. Starting in 2016 the Charlotte Museum of History led a community project to save the historic Siloam School from destruction, restore it, and bring the school building to the museum. During the duration of my research, the museum fundraised to relocate the Siloam School, moved the Siloam School to the museum, restored the building to its original design, and opened the building for the public to view. My project focused on identifying and evaluating the museum curation staff's goals for the Save Siloam School Project exhibit and comparing those goals to what visitors experienced when viewing African American cultural and historical experiences in the exhibit. My project also identifies recommendations for the museum to implement in their curatorial and educational plans for future exhibits regarding the Siloam School and Rosenwald Schools.
