Abstract

The goal of this project was to examine the amount of unhealthy versus healthy food and beverage items in vending machines across UNCC’s campus. Almost 22 million students are enrolled in college or graduate school in the US. Previous research shows that universities do not offer a healthy food environment through the types of food and beverages they allow to be sold on campus. Many young adults entering college may not have the space, capacity or knowledge to cook their own healthy meals, so they rely on their university’s dining services. K-12 schools have healthy nutrition and beverage policies, but universities do not. Past literature finds that when universities implement a healthy food and beverage policy on campus, students eat more fruits and vegetables, while sales revenues increase at the same time.
