Abstract

Within nursing, the lack of male representation remains at a critical gap. It is crucial to recognize that nursing as a health science field benefits from more male participation. Data illustrates that more female nurses (and nursing students) dominate this field in comparison to males. This research will explore the impact of this gender gap within nursing and address society’s perception on it. It will also further explore the benefits of male representation for patient care. This investigation may offer insights applicable to other majors facing similar challenges. To address this, a review of existing literature and collections of oral accounts from three male nursing students at UNC Charlotte will be used. Additionally, resources used to investigate this research question include the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Special Archives Collection and oral accounts from different undergraduate students in the United States. Documents from the special archives collection will provide past enrollment data from UNC Charlotte’s nursing program. Current enrollment data of nursing majors from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will be used to address this topic. The implications of this work may include interventions or recommendations that will apply to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte or other universities to resolve this issue.
