Faculty, In this article, we review key considerations for preparing a manuscript for submission to a journal that uses guidelines in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). We describe features of primary sections of a research paper and provide examples for review and consideration. For the method and results sections of the paper, we offer more detailed descriptions for side heading/subsection material (e.g., participants and setting, procedure, data analysis and design, tables and figures). We include additional information on checkpoints for manuscript preparation, some APA rules (e.g., spacing, numbers, italics, abbreviations, quotation marks), guidelines for headings, citations for sources in text (e.g., single author, multiple authors, books, periodicals) as well as the development of the reference list. Miscellaneous considerations and the review process also are addressed.
